Carlo Scarpa in Glass, Adriana Christesen

One of the most famous glass artists working on the island of Murano in the early twentieth century was Carlo Scarpa. Scarpa made use of unique and experimental methods of design. He broke conventions practiced for hundreds of years in Murano glassmaking. Specifically, the designer used cristallo and lattimo glass in conjunction with techniques like murrino and filigrana in his pieces. Despite the fact that Scarpa never blew his own glass, his ingenuity in design and modern style of glassmaking has produced some of the most original and innovative examples of handmade glass in Venetian history.
